Greenland white fronted geese migrations to their breeding grounds in West Greenland and then over winter in Ireland and Britain. They are a special feature of our winter landscape but there has been a steep decline in numbers in recent years. The jury is out on the cause of this but hunting, habitat loss and competition on their breeding grounds may be implicated.
At the Galloway Glens we are supporting RSPB and WWT to gather more information on their movements using radio tracking. 5 geese have now had transmitters fitted and there movements, together with those of other geese from other populations in Scotland can be monitored HERE
This project will provide fantastic high-resolution detail into the movements of geese around the area and also on a number of migrations back to Greenland. The data is openly shared through the link above allowing everyone to follow their fortunes.
