Tongland Abbey was founded by Alan of Galloway in 1218. The Lords of Galloway were active in this regard founding Dundrennan Abbey and others.
In 1455 Tongland Abbey hosted royal forces who were laying siege to Threave Castle, an indication of how significant it was in the local landscape.
Presumably equivalent in size to neighbouring Dundrennan Abbey, it has not survived due to active reuse of the stonework in surrounding houses and bridges.
Caledonia (V3) by George Chalmers in 1824, states:”the country people having undermined the building for free stone…”
Many thanks to Kirkcudbright History Society for the event.

We are pleased to be working with our friends the New Galloway Angling Association to improve access to the banks of Loch Ken and open up areas for fishing. The works are taking place in selected locations between Cadgers Loop and just above Lochside Point to remove dead trees and bank-side scrub. All the trees removed have been carefully assessed before removal with a number being retained for their potential wildlife habitat value. The results will start to improve views, bankside access and open up fishing opportunities. 😄
